A Titus 2 man

Titus 2:2, 6-8 says: “Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.

6Likewise urge the young men to be sensible;

7in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified,

8sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.”

Yesterday at Ryan’s graduation, I was reminded of a man in his life that has striven to be this example to him. A retired man in our church started meeting for prayer with Ryan on Sunday mornings before the church service. It was supposed to be a prayer time for all men in the church, but Ryan, Dad and this man were the only ones that showed up.

Soon this man asked if Ryan would like to meet individually to pray with him, so Wednesday nights, they’d meet together and talk and pray. They have been praying together for years and now meet on their own time.

As I looked around in the gymnasium yesterday, there this man sat by himself, but there to support Ryan. I am so thankful for a man in the church who strives to follow the Biblical example of mentoring set up for men and women in this chapter of Titus. Ryan has two strong men in his life that he feels safe talking to and that is a relief to a sometimes worried older sister.

Seeing this man’s example in action reminds me that one day that will be me. What am I building now that will be worth sharing to a younger generation (all too soon)? Is it of lasting value? “…when He has tried me I shall come forth as gold.” Job 23:10.

    A 1 Timothy 3 man, a very similar passage, is a thought I’ve had on my heart for a long time. One father’s day, my pastor in MI preached from this passage and showed that though this was written specifically to show the standard that must be required of anyone desiring to be a pastor or deacon of a church, this is the standard that ALL MEN should strive for as God does not set a standard for leadership and then another standard for everyone else. He says, “Be ye holy, for I am holy (1 Pet. 1:16).” Good thoughts, Steph!
