Themes of Salvation

As I was preparing for the day this morning, I smiled at the sweetness found in the second verse of William Cowper’s song “Sometimes a Light Surprises.”

“In holy contemplation we sweetly then pursue,

The theme of God’s salvation and find it ever new,

Set free from present sorrow we cheerfully can say

‘Let the unknown tomorrow bring with it what it may.'”

This hymn has been precious to me throughout college and I savored the truth in it again this morning. If we are contemplating, meditating, and digesting our salvation today, what would be the theme that we find? I often think this through and try to narrow it down-is there just one theme? The them of indelible grace comes to mind quickly, but what about mercy? Justice? Righteousness? So many themes-the things which saved us and carry us.

I stand in awe of Christ’s perfect gift-we are really to savor that today, not just on the day we receive it!
